The Building

With the offshore blockhouse and the gate - house , the real entrance, the fort looks like an old bastion.

It was established on a flat arable land surrounded by a 3 metres long and 42 metres wide moat.
Prisoners of the penitentiary in Sonnenburg had to transport the excavated material on top of the vaults with the help of wheelbarrows.
Today the thrown up dam is the only possibility of crossing the moat.

The gate - house

The main entrance was secured by a grill, a drawbridge and two opposite situated casemates for the guards.
The visitor can find in tandem arranged one-storied houses which are made of bricks. The gate-house, the middle and front barracks are divided by open yards and connected by the long middle way.
In the main way there is a 90 metres deep well which is still working today.

It`s worth seeing the former ammunition depot with its security system to provide a big disaster during a possible explosion. The Fort Gorgast consists of casemates that were planned as accommodations for 200 to 250 infantrymen and about 60 artillerymen.

2.Wall

The National People`s Army (NVA) was the last military user. They stored a lot of ammunition there.
Since September 9th, 1997 the building has been restored with lots of volunteers and the support of the community Küstriner Vorland as its new owner.
The Fort Gorgast which was classified as a historical monument is a unique structure in the federal state Brandenburg .
